I think of my father on his birthday today
The legacy he forged in his own way
The battles we fought, the words we exchanged
The rare tender moments, both heartfelt & strange

Though we clashed & butt heads, as fathers and sons do
I find I miss him more with each day anew
But I thank my God, with a heart full of grace
That I told him I loved him before he left this place

Not long before his final breath was drawn
I spoke a truth I’ll forever lean on:
He was my anchor, my guide, my stay
And I loved him dearly in every way
